James D.A. Millington

Profile

James Millington27 year-old Research Associate at Michigan State University developing an ecological-economic model of a managed forest landscape. James recently completed his PhD at King’s College London where he undertook a socio-ecological modelling project that examined the impact of potential human-caused land use/cover change upon ecological patterns and processes in a Mediterranean landscape. Trained as Geographer, James has developed strong quantitative skills (statistics, computer programming) and has experience in both terrestrial ecological and social forms of research and data collection. James' main research interest is the interaction between human activity and the physical environment in terrestrial landscapes, and the modelling thereof. His teaching experience (at King's) includes undergraduate tutoring, lecturing and assisting in both computer labs and physical landscape field-classes.

Brief Biog
James moved to London to take a place on the Geography BSc in the Department of Geography at King's College London in 1999, after being born and raised in Bristol, UK. On achieving his degree with first class honours he decided to remain at King's to read for the MSc in Environmental Modelling, Monitoring and Management offered by the department (awarded with Distinction in 2003). During his masters studies James fostered good relationships with members of the Environmental Monitoring and Modelling group with whom he collaborated successfully to secure an ESRC/NERC Interdisciplinary Studentship to fund his PhD. On successful completion of his PhD in early 2007 James moved to the Center for Systems Integration and Sustainability at Michigan State University as a visiting research associate to develop an ecological-economic model of a managed forest landscape.

James' interests outside of academia are driven largely by sports and socialising. He played football for King's (1st and 2nd XIs) every season between 1999-2006 and captained the 2nd XI during 2001/02. He has also played cricket for the college and was President of KCL Cricket Club during 2004/05. Now in the US, James has taken up alien sports known as 'Soccer' and 'Ultimate Frisbee', and will take every opportunity to get out to explore both the wilderness and urban environments of this new world he finds himself in. When in the UK James occasionally takes the opportunity to go and watch Bristol City Football , Bristol Rugby and Gloucestershire County Cricket clubs lose to their opposition. [more...]
